Batik : History and Development

Crafts batik in Indonesia began in the era of the kingdom of Majapahit. At that time, its usage is limited only to the palace environment and is owned by royalty and the followers. Because a lot of followers who lived outside the palace, then happened of knowledge transfer to make batik to the regular community. In time, the growth of the more widespread, become home-working women to fill in spare time. Cloth that is used is the homespun cloth and the coloring material coming from Indonesian plants such as mengkudu, tinggi, soga, nila and soda material materials made from soda ash and salt, made from clay mud. Type batik produced its called "Batik Tulis". The "Batik Cap" known start since around 1920, after world war I. The making of batik centers areas are mostly located on the island of Java, such as Yogyakarta (Batik Yogyakarta}, Solo (Batik Solo), Surakarta (Batik Surakarta), Pekalongan (Batik Pekalongan), Cirebon (Batik Cirebon), and others.

Until this time, that icons about batik clothing is a worn clothing for official certain occasions, such as attending the wedding invitation.
It is reasonable, based on history, batik is a clothing for the kingdom family and its used only on certain occasions. To preserve one of a cultural heritage, the Indonesian government make regulations regarding the use of batik clothing for government officers to the school level. On a particular day, they are required to wear once in a week. Government action is get a positive response from the designers clothes, many designers perform fashion show with batik theme. The result is, a few months ago, dress with batik motif was booming in Indonesia. Many manufacturers produce release clothing that is issued with a batik motif, especially women's clothing. Hopefully not only the right but so...
